I hope you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. With any luck you were able to spend quality time with your loved ones and got your fill of turkey and football. Just about everyone is glad to see Novembers political season come to a close. Hopefully we will gain strength and unity as a result of the outcomes.
I thank all of our members, actives and retirees, who made the trek down to the South Bay Labor offices to walk for our candidates and against Measure V. Although we were ultimately unable to defeat Measure V, we made a valiant effort. Despite this setback, we were able to ensure that all of the City Council candidates that we endorsed were elected. We can only hope that new members of the council will not follow the unprincipled lead of the previous majority.
POA elections concluded at noon on November 15, 2010. There was a record turnout by our membership over 1100 members took the time to vote. Jim and I extend our gratitude and appreciation to the membership for re-electing us to the positions of vice president and president. We will do our best to guide the membership through the difficult challenges ahead of us. I also want to congratulate those directors who were re-elected to their positions, as well as to welcome the newest members to the board. They too will have an integral part to play in addressing the issues we will face in the coming months.
Now that the election cycle is over, it is time for us to unite and rally around each other. Through a record turnout vote we have demonstrated to the city we will not be divided from within. Our city leaders have worked very hard trying to turn San Jose residents against us. We have shown that by continuing to provide our citizens with the excellent police services they have been accustomed to, that this will not happen. At the same time, our staffing levels are very low for a city this size and will be reduced even lower with future potential layoffs. Please take one call at time. Do not 952 on any call, especially two officer calls. By doing so you put your own personal safety at risk.
I would like to extend my gratitude to member Tim Jackson for being a class act. Shortly after being notified by the POA Election Committee that I was elected as POA president, I receive a congratulatory phone call from Tim. Tim told me that the membership had spoken and that the members needed to move forward and rally around Jim and me. I commend him for his character.
I wish all of our members, the POA staff and their families, the Board of Directors and their families, as well as the rest of the POA executive board and their families a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a healthy, Happy New Year.
Lastly, but most importantly, be safe out there.
